After an approximately 10-minute drive from Podgorica towards Niksic, a green landscape unusually for this part of Montenegro will be opening up on the right side of the road. This is the valley of the emerald green River Zeta, the Bjelopavlici plain, named after the Bjelopavlici tribe. Located in this green and fertile oasis is the municipality of Danilovgrad covering an area of 501 km2. According to the last census, the municipality has a little more than 16,000 inhabitants, of which some 7,100 live in the administrative and cultural centre of the municipality, the town of Danilovgrad. 


Ostrog Monastery

Ostrog Monastery

Main tourist attraction within Danilovgrad municipality is Ostrog Monastery, famous orthodox pilgrimage site visited by believers from afar. It is located on an almost vertical cliff overseeing Bjelopavlići plain, approximately 15 km (9.3 mi) from Danilovgrad in the direction of Nikšić.
Other notable points of interest are Ždrebaonik Monastery and well of Glava Zete. Two kilometres from Danilovgrad, approximately in the centre of the Bjelopavlici Plain, is the Zdrebaonik monastery complex. It consists of the Church of St. Michael the Archangel and the monastery dwellings. The church was built in 1818, on the foundations of a much older sanctuary from the era of the Nemanjic Dynasty. Since 1856, the preserved remains of St. Arsenije of Srem, the successor of Rastko Nemanjić (St. Sava) have been kept in the monastery.

Fundaments to this city were made first by King Nikola in 1870. As the surrounding mountains are over 1000 meters high Danilovgrad is able for development of winter tourism. City is well known for good marble rocks so attracts a number of artists. Famous attraction and sight is well of Glava Zete it is located in the vicinity of the city. The Valley of Zeta is a wonderful natural and cultural heritage, visual space and expression. A great natural gallery of beauty and symphony of colours, sounds and shapes in the open sky indeed.

The characteristics of architecture are: Danilovgrad’s unique balcony, facades openings edged with details, houses with a small number of floors. A great part of yards that shared gardens according to the first urban plan is preserved.


The significant state and regional institutions perform in Danilovgrad: Military Center, ZIKS (correctional facility), home for asylum seekers, Police Academy and Forensic Center. With the Regional School of Public Administration-ReSPA, is officially on the map of Europe.

Art Colony

Art Colony

The Art Colony is the first and the only institution of this kind in Montenegro established in 1972. Its creation was inspired by lasting stonecutting and architectural skills and heritage of this region, natural resources-noble stone in mines Klikovace, Maljat, Vinici and desire to show Danilovgrad in a good light. This colony is the proof that an authentic art has no limits.

Some of the hotels in Danilovgrad are Hotel Perjanik, Hotel Glava Zete, Hotel Pejovic.
