17 June 2014 News

23 June is the UN Public Service Day. It was designated by the United Nations General Assembly. In this day the value and virtue of service to the community at the local, national and global levels are celebrated, and prizes are awarded to public sector organizations for contributions made to the cause of enhancing the role, prestige and visibility of public service. In this day the United Nations organizes the UN Public Service Day and Awards Ceremony - a global event where innovators from the entire world meet to present and discuss their awarded initiatives to improve citizens’ quality of life. The United Nations Public Service Awards Programme (UNPSA) is the most prestigious international recognition of excellence in public service and is held annually. Since its inception in 2003, the UNPSA has been a valuable vehicle for facilitating the collection and adaptation of innovative practices in public governance.

The United Nations Public Service Day and Awards Ceremony, which was traditionally held at United Nations Headquarters in New York is now held every year in a different region of the world to provide a unique opportunity to countries and regions to bring together their best initiatives and share their knowledge with the world at large.

This year the UN Public Service Day and Awards will be held in Seoul, Republic of Korea at the Korea International Exhibition Centre (KINTEX) from 23 to 26 June 2014, making this the first time that Asia will be host to this prestigious event. Consequently, the theme of the 2014 United Nations Public Service Forum is on the theme “Innovating Governance for Sustainable Development and Peoples’ Happiness”. This year the forum will be organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), Division for Public Administration and Development Management (DPADM), in partnership with the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) in collaboration with the hosting Government of the Republic of Korea.

This year the UN Public Service Day in Montenegro is celebrated in all the levels of public governance.  The event is jointly organized by the Ministry of Interior of Montenegro, Regional School of Public Administration (ReSPA), The Human Resources Authority of Montenegro (HRMA), the National Association of Municipalities of Montenegro in collaboration with Institute Alternativa from the civil society.
